The Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter lets you control your camera's focus and make cool effects easily. The filter has a twisty ring that changes how dark the picture looks. You can make it from 2 to 8 times darker. If you make it darker, the camera blinks slower, like a camera blink in slow motion. This makes the picture show the same light but look blurry too. One good thing about this filter is you only need one instead of many different ones – saves time and money!
To use it, just put the filter on your camera's lens, set it to "Min" darkness, and look at what you want to take a picture of. If it's really dark, be careful when you're trying to make things clear. If it's still blurry, use your hands to twist the lens until it's how you want it.
Imagine your camera can take a picture in 1/500th of a second with the f-stop set to 8 (this is kind of like how much light comes in). But if you turn the filter to "Min," it changes the blink time to 1/125th of a second at the same f-stop. This makes the picture 2 times darker and a little blurry. If you want more darkness, keep turning the filter until the picture takes 1/2 second at f/8 (8 times darker). Just remember, the marks on the filter don't give the exact darkness.
This filter makes pictures look fun, like waterfalls looking soft or cars in the city looking like they're moving a lot. You can use it when it's really bright outside and still take cool pictures. It also helps you make things blurry and take pictures with more light. It also stops pictures from being too bright when it's sunny.
The Tiffen folks use special tricks to make these filters. They put two pieces of glass together and make them super smooth to 1/10,000th of an inch. This helps keep the colors and darkness just right.
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
ColorCore Technology
The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration
