The Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter gives you a cool way to control your pictures' depth of field and make special effects. The filter has a twisty ring built in that makes the picture lighter or darker, from 2 to 8 stops (kind of like gears on a bike). The more you turn it, the slower your camera's blink is. This longer blink time shows the same brightness but can also make things look blurry. This filter helps because you don't need to buy lots of different filters. Just twist this one and save time and money!
You just put the filter on your camera lens, turn it to "Min," and point and look. Be careful when things get darker – make sure to look really carefully. If it's not clear, use your hands to turn the lens for the look you want.
Imagine your camera can take a picture at 1/500 second with the f-stop at 8 (this makes things not too bright or dark). But if you turn the filter to "Min," it changes the blink to 1/125 at the same f-stop. This makes the picture 2 stops darker and a bit blurry. If you want more, just twist more until you're at 1/2 second at f/8 (8 stops). But, be careful, the marks on the filter aren't super exact.
This filter helps make pictures look cool, like waterfalls looking soft or cars in the city looking like they're moving a lot. You can also use it when it's really bright outside and still take cool pictures. Plus, it helps you control how blurry things look and lets you take pictures with big holes to let more light in. It also stops pictures from being too bright when it's sunny.
The Tiffen people use special tricks to make these filters just right. They put two pieces of glass together and make them smooth to 1/10,000th of an inch. This makes sure colors and darkness stay just how they want them.
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
ColorCore Technology
The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration
