The Sound Devices Astral ARX16 is a versatile 8-channel true-diversity wireless receiver designed for professional production sound, live performance, broadcast, and demanding RF environments. Its compact ½-rack chassis measures just 8.0 × 6.6 × 1.6 inches, making it suitable for sound bags, carts, racks, and remote installations.

The ARX16 can be expanded from 8 channels to 12 or 16 channels, providing a flexible solution for productions that need additional wireless microphone capacity without replacing the receiver.

SpectraBand Technology: 169–1525 MHz

The Astral ARX16 uses SpectraBand Technology to provide an exceptionally wide 169–1525 MHz tuning range in a single receiver.

The included A20-Monarch antennas are designed to cover the full tuning range, helping keep wireless setups compact while giving sound professionals greater flexibility when working in different RF environments.

The integrated Real Time Spectrum Analyzer (RTSA) provides continuous visualization of the surrounding RF spectrum, allowing users to monitor RF activity and coordinate frequencies while monitoring audio.

RTSA features include:

Normal + Peak Hold
Average + Peak Hold
Continuous RF History
TV Channel Finder for 6, 7, and 8 MHz television channels
Frequency Exclusion Regions for avoiding known occupied spectrum
Whip Antenna Length guidance for optimizing antenna length
GainForward Transmitter Control

The Astral ARX16 supports GainForward architecture, allowing gain, low-cut, and limiter settings on compatible Astral Mini, TX, and HH transmitters to be controlled directly from the receiver or compatible mixer-recorder.

This provides centralized transmitter management and reduces the need to physically access transmitters during production.

Additional transmitter-management features include wireless firmware updates over NexLink and enhanced transmitter button mapping for control, macros, and GPIO events.

NexLink Remote Control

NexLink provides long-distance remote control and telemetry between the Astral ARX16 and compatible Astral transmitters.

Users can control and monitor compatible Astral Mini, TX, and HH transmitters remotely, including transmitter power and GainForward settings.

NexLink also supports transmitter timecode distribution, expanded control coverage through multiple Astral Outposts, and improved reconnection and connection stability.

Dante Audio Networking

The Astral ARX16 provides Dante audio-over-IP for RF receiver audio, allowing audio to be transported over a network to compatible Dante devices.

Combined with PoE power and Web App control, this makes it possible to build highly flexible remote receiver installations where power, audio, and control can be handled through network infrastructure.

The ARX16 also provides dual DB-25 connectors supporting up to 16 channels of microphone, line, or AES outputs. Dante channels can be converted to analog and/or AES outputs for applications such as IFB, voice-of-god, and sending audio from a mixer to set.

Flexible Power Options

The receiver supports multiple powering methods, including:

PoE+
DC input
8-Series mixer-recorder power
AC mains with an optional adapter

PoE support is particularly useful for remote installations, allowing the ARX16 to be powered through network infrastructure while Dante carries audio and the Web App provides remote control.

Web App Remote Control

The Astral ARX16 includes a built-in web server that allows the receiver to be controlled from a computer, smartphone, or tablet using a web browser.

This provides convenient remote access to receiver settings, RF monitoring, frequency coordination, transmitter control, and system configuration without requiring direct access to the receiver.

Compact, Modular Design

The Astral ARX16 is designed as a modular RF platform that can be used independently or integrated with Sound Devices 8-Series mixer-recorders.

The receiver can be disconnected and remotely positioned from an 8-Series system, providing greater flexibility than an integrated RF, mixer, and recorder configuration.

The A20-QuickDock, available separately, allows the receiver to be docked and undocked from compatible 8-Series mixer-recorders quickly and without tools.

Advanced RF Reliability

The ARX16 incorporates RF SAW filtering to provide strong rejection of interference from nearby IFB and camera-hop transmitters.

Additional system features include:

Full 10 Hz–20 kHz audio bandwidth
100% digital long-range modulation
BNC timecode input
NexLink transmitter timecode synchronization
Remote transmitter power-down
Flexible audio output routing
RF Mirror functionality
Network diagnostics
Dante and Control port MAC-address display
75-ohm timecode termination
SoundBase control and monitoring
Three Aux-triggered audio output paths
Headphone solo routing to audio outputs when used with ARX16 or ARX32
