The Sony FX5 combines professional cinema capabilities with a compact, production-ready design. It features a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR2 image processor with an integrated AI processing unit.

Designed for documentaries, commercial productions, branded content and independent filmmaking, the FX5 supports 5K Open Gate capture, internal X-OCN recording and advanced subject-recognition autofocus. Its lightweight body, enhanced stabilization and flexible connectivity make it suitable for handheld shooting, gimbals, studio setups and multi-camera productions.

Full-Frame Stacked Sensor

The FX5 is built around a 16.6MP full-frame stacked CMOS sensor engineered for fast readout and detailed cinematic imaging. Its stacked architecture helps reduce rolling-shutter distortion while supporting smooth capture of fast-moving subjects.

Combined with Sony’s colour science, the camera produces natural skin tones, refined highlight detail and flexible image files suitable for both fast-turnaround delivery and advanced post-production.

Internal X-OCN Recording

The FX5 brings internal X-OCN recording to a compact Cinema Line body. This compressed RAW-based format preserves extensive tonal and colour information while producing more manageable file sizes than conventional RAW workflows.

Three internal X-OCN options are available:

• X-OCN LT: Prioritises image quality and post-production flexibility.
• X-OCN C1: Balances image quality, compression and recording duration.
• X-OCN C2: Provides greater compression for extended recording times and more efficient storage.

5K Open Gate Capture

Open Gate recording uses the sensor’s 3:2 imaging area, providing additional framing flexibility during post-production. This makes it easier to create horizontal, vertical and square versions from the same footage or apply reframing, stabilisation and visual effects without compromising the original composition.

The camera can record internally at up to 4992 × 3328 resolution and 59.94 fps using 16-bit X-OCN LT.

AI-Powered Autofocus

The BIONZ XR2 processor includes a dedicated AI processing unit for advanced subject recognition and tracking. The autofocus system can recognise people, animals and birds while maintaining focus as the subject moves through the frame.

Improved low-light autofocus performance also supports reliable operation in challenging or changing lighting conditions.

Triple Base ISO and Dynamic Range

Triple Base ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12,800 give filmmakers greater control across different lighting environments. The ISO 4000 base setting provides an additional option between standard and high-sensitivity shooting.

The FX5 offers up to 15 stops of advertised dynamic range, extending to 16 stops when Sensor Overdrive Mode is used. This helps retain detail in bright highlights and dark shadow areas.

Stabilisation for Handheld Production

Five-axis sensor-shift stabilisation helps reduce unwanted camera movement during handheld shooting. Dynamic Active Mode adds electronic correction for smoother footage while walking or working in fast-moving production environments.

These stabilisation options make the camera suitable for documentaries, events, travel productions and solo-operated shoots.

Professional Monitoring Tools

The 3.5-inch widescreen touchscreen features a four-axis adjustable design, allowing flexible positioning for high-angle, low-angle and handheld shooting.

A redesigned control layout, multifunction dial and six assignable custom buttons provide quick access to important settings. The interface is optimised for cinema production while remaining accessible to filmmakers familiar with Sony Alpha cameras.

The magnesium-alloy body includes multiple 1/4"-20 mounting points for attaching accessories without requiring a full camera cage.

The included Sony XLR-H2 Handle Unit expands the FX5’s audio and handling capabilities. It adds two XLR/TRS combination inputs with 48V phantom power, dedicated audio controls, a microphone mount and support for professional multi-channel recording.

The handle also supports 32-bit float audio recording, providing greater dynamic range and reducing the risk of clipped audio during unpredictable recording situations.

Optional Electronic Viewfinder

The separately available Sony DVF-EL1 electronic viewfinder connects directly to the camera and provides a high-brightness OLED display for outdoor and handheld operation. It can tilt upward by up to 90° for more flexible viewing positions.

Please note that the DVF-EL1 and XLR Handle Unit cannot be attached simultaneously.
